Sad Songs and Waltzes cover by Cake.
The original by the great Willie Nelson himself:

...and now somehow I’m listening to an Italian Waltz on Mandolin
Funny how that works.

That is the most unique application of the steel guitar I’ve ever seen.

Robert Randolph is definitely unique.

T hat guy in the background? That’s about my skill level on the guitar. Give me a series of chords and I’ll be happy to strum out a rhythm for you. Ask for more and you’ll be sorely disappointed.
One of the highlights of living in Louisiana is my wife’s uncle. He and his siblings grew up playing guitar and singing for entertainment. He came over one evening and we broke out the guitars. I strummed a chord progression while he played lead and sang. That was one of the most memorable evenings we’ve had while living here.

I wish I had practiced more when I was young. Now that I’m older I can really appreciate the amount of time people must have invested to get as good as many of them are. I also wish we had Youtube back then , because following along might have been just slightly easier.
I do still have that old acoustic in storage, though the strat clone got sold off years ago. Maybe I should dig it out one of these days, if I ever find more than a moment to myself which I can use to focus on something.

I played woodwinds in high school and didn’t pick up the guitar until after I finished college. I really wanted to learn how to play classical, but I didn’t know what I was getting into, so I bought the wrong guitar (steel string acoustic
)
and took the wrong class. I was gifted a proper classical guitar, but I tried to learn on my own instead of finding a good instructor. I bought a cheap electric to play
Rocksmith, but didn’t get far with it.
The end result is a guy with three
guitars who can play some chords and a little bit of classical.
Tim Snow was the inspiration for all this. This isn’t his best song, but it’s the only one I can find on YouTube:
When I fell down the fingerstyle rabbit hole, I found Chris Proctor and had the good luck to catch one of his workshops. Fantastic musician and super nice guy.

Is this real content? Are you suggesting that Cake cover was anything other than a pale, hacky, out of tune mess?

I saw that in his bio on Wikipedia. That was all new to me, then again, I wasn’t raised in that kind of church. I only knew of steel guitars from the twangy country music my grandpa played on AM radio when driving us around in his old truck.

These are both beautiful. Maybe I’m just tired and stressed out from work, but this gave me a few minutes of inner silence I haven’t had for days, thank you.
I think I’ll try to listen to some Willie Nelson. What if I’m like, really into country? Is this even country, btw?
I’m a big Johnny Cash fan, I’ve spent a big part of my life listening to American IV for many car rides. “I hung my head” gives me chills in seconds. Something about this song really struck me the first time and it never went away. That story is so powerful to me.

Music is an amazing salve. I’m glad you found some solace in your busy week.
The Man in Black was a fantastic artist who crossed a number of genres, country included. A lot of the great songs told stories like this.

Cake’s Fashion Nugget was the first CD that I had that dropped the f-bomb. Thanks to a copy of my older sister’s CD that we cleverly marked as another artist so that I could get my Cake jam on. Such a good band. Cake is number one on that cover but I gotta say I was super excited when I realized that this existed:

Also, Cake did a good job making songs about cars: “The Distance” “Stick Shifts and Safety Belts” “Long Line of Cars” etc.

“Cake’s Fashion Nugget was the first CD that I had that dropped the f-bomb.”
I had it playing in my truck when my mom was visiting and I was sing ing along when the f-bomb dropped. Yes, I dropped it right along with them. The look on her face was priceless. I was a recent college grad when it happened, so there wasn’t much she could say. I was still apologetic and she was forgiving. I belie ve she said so me th ing along th e lines of “that was not in the original song!”
I’ve never heard of Tyler Childers. Thanks for sharing.

Around the same time of my contraband Cake CD is when my mom realized that all of her children had been exposed to all of the four letter words that she began to describe things to us (and to feign excitement) as “bitchin, man!” She got a lot cooler to all of us after that!
If you like Tyler Childers then check out his NPR Little Desk concert for a good 15 minute introduction. But, uh, just don’t listen to it with Mother because he for sure tosses an f-bomb or two in. Also, I’m pretty sure that is his wife that he is duetting with in the video that I posted.

My wife wanted to play “I will survive” at our wedding reception, I guess it’s a common song to play at them. But I think it’s kind of a horrible song to play when celebrating a marriage... anyway. I told her that’s fine as long as it’s the Cake version.

My wife wanted Joe Cocker’s “Feelin’ Alright” for our first dance until I pointed out the lyrics to her. We went with Van Morrison’s “Days Like This” instead. I felt that it had a bit more positive of a message. I didn’t slip any Cake requests to the band but I damn sure got my Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd fix in.
